What is CBD?
The compound, explained
CBD — short for Cannabidiol — is a chemical compound of the cannabis plant. It is non-psychoactive, meaning it won't get you high.
You may have heard of the strain "Charlotte's Web," developed for a young girl named Charlotte who was born with Dravet syndrome. By age three she was suffering 300 grand mal seizures per week despite treatment. Traditional medication did little — CBD did. After switching to a high-CBD, minimal-THC hemp strain developed in her name, Charlotte's seizures dropped to four per month.
Four decades of preclinical trials found CBD shows promise as an
- Anti-inflammatory
- Antioxidant
- Neuroprotectant
- Anxiolytic
- Antidepressant
- Analgesic
- Anti-tumoral agent
- Anti-psychotic
How does CBD work?
Locks and keys
CBD is one of more than 80 cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. Cannabinoids bind to special receptors on your cells found throughout the body — the central nervous system, the digestive tract, even the skin.
These receptors make up your endocannabinoid system (ECS) — thought to be the greatest neurotransmitter system in the body. In simple terms: cannabinoid receptors act as locks on your cells, and CBD acts as the key.
The ECS affects just about everything
- Mood
- Memory
- Motor control
- Immune function
- Pain perception
- Appetite
- Sleep
- Bone development
